Bring home a piece of Zeigler history this holiday season.

Great news for the holidays! The Zeigler Public Library is once again selling our unique commemorative Christmas ornaments, special keepsakes that honor the rich history and character of our community. First created by our board in 2001, these ornaments make the perfect gift or collectible.

The ornament features three iconic elements: the Zeigler Public Library, the original Zeigler Coal Company Mining Office, and the legendary local figure known as the “Goat Man.”

For those new to the tale, the “Goat Man” of Zeigler refers to George Surdell, a local eccentric who lived among his goats and became a memorable part of town folklore. His story is often mixed with that of the more widely known traveling preacher Charles “Ches” McCartney—who journeyed across America with a goat-drawn wagon—but Surdell’s legacy is distinctly rooted here in Zeigler, adding warmth and character to our local history.

The ornament’s presentation folder will display the artwork on one side and a brief historical description on the other, honoring the people and places that shaped our community.

Our Library itself is a cherished part of that heritage. Nestled in the heart of town, the building once served as our train depot before beginning a new chapter as Zeigler’s public library in 1923. For more than a century, it has been a place of movement, gathering, learning, and renewal—values we continue to uphold today.

These commemorative ornaments will make a beautiful addition to your holiday décor and a meaningful way to celebrate Zeigler’s past.

To purchase an ornament, you can find them at Zeigler City Hall, LJs on the Circle, and at the Library. The Goat Man ornament is available exclusively at the Library due to limited availably. If you choose to purchase below we can not guarantee delivery before Christmas, but if you come in and show us your receipt we can give it to in at the library.
